Maria Oiticica is one of Brazil’s most important names when it comes to eco jewelry, which seeks to transform natural materials into wearable art. The designer works with wood, tree bark, dry leaves, bones, seeds, exotic fish skins, amongst other unexpected materials. The designer distinguishes herself for her use of Amazonian materials like the
Jarina seed, an icon which ignited Maria’s story in design, as well as the Arumã palm leaf, which she mixes with other local seeds in order to weave a type of straw that is often used in her pieces. Maria sees seeds as symbols of life, so she listens to them when creating, respecting the exuberance of their colors and forms and allowing their aesthetic to guide the outcome of her accessories. These natural materials are then combined with silver and gold elements, bringing in Maria’s urban influences. The resulting into exotic, yet sophisticated nature- conscious artworks that can be worn in Rio, Manaus or anywhere in the world. Each resulting creation is unique, as each seed and each piece of wood has singular characteristics.
